Children will need to explore familiar situations, artefacts and systems in order to develop an awareness of design and technology. They will learn to recognise that a wide variety of materials are used to design and make things. They will have opportunities to explore various materials in order to discover their different properties. They will be taught the skills which enable them to join together materials and use equipment safely.

As the children progress they will be encouraged to identify their own tasks for design and technology. Planning will become more detailed and they will be encouraged to consider procedures that minimise waste and achieve accuracy and quality.
